Atlanta GA was originally sold by the Cherokee and Creeks to settlers in 1822. This property formally know as Standing Peachtree from then on would be know as Decatur, and later as trading post called Thrashersville. The name is relevant today. Atlanta’s hockey team is named the Thrashers.

 In the year of 1836 a vote to build a rail road know as the Western and Atlantic Railroad was passed and when completed would provide a direct trade route with Midwest states.

 Construction of the railroad began in 1837 in an area know as East Terminus, and was know as Terminus. The name would not stick. Things move fast here in Atlanta GA. After quick growth the addition of many buildings and number of people residing there the city was renamed Marthaville.

 As stated above things move quickly here. Marthville was not good enough. Another name change was needed. Another name was suggested by the Chief Railroad Engineer, Atlantis –Pacific, later it was shorted to the Atlanta. A city that would later be home to the world busiest airport, and a hub of international business worldwide.

 Atlanta would have a long road ahead of it to reach its current status. During the America Civil War Atlanta was an important railroad and supply hub to the military. Atlanta GA has a long history of battles in the South. One of the most notable included a General named as William Sherman that began The “Sherman March” in Atlanta and went South.

 Three years after General Sherman burned the city to the ground Atlanta GA became the State Capital and was promoted to investors as the “New South”. This was the beginning of Atlanta GA reach its current status world wide.

 Atlanta GA continued to grow year after year and later way the back drop foe the classic Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Times were simple for a times but war was in the horizon. Hitler was causing waves and this would further advance the growth of the Atlanta GA. During the second Great War Bell Aircraft opened a factory in the suburbs of Atlanta called Marietta GA. Atlanta continues to this day to be a strong part of the military movement. Bell Aircraft is now the site of Dobbins Air Force Base feeding the economy surrounding it.

 Following the War , there were more wars. Although, none were as great as the Civil Right Movement lead by racial tension. The tensions were fueled by Black Leader that expressed their selves through violence. As did Black leaders speak out so did those opposing. Churches were bombed, hangings and other acts were a regular thing.

 Following the outburst of violence between the races, Atlanta GA became the center of the Civil Rights Movement when a young black man named Dr. Martin Luther King a student from one of Atlanta’s Historic Black colleges began to speak out. Dr. Martin Luther King became the spokesman leader of the movement. This lead to the organization – Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee locating there offices in Atlanta GA. Racial tension continued in the South in spite of efforts to say there was not tension.

 As time passed desegregation was begun and a population shift bench mark in the 20th Century was passed. Blacks were became the majority and became a grand influence in politics by electing the first Black Atlanta Mayor in 1973.

 Atlanta GA is known for it fast pace and just as the city changed in the 20th century. Demographics continue to change. Urban sprawl may be the reason. Atlanta GA is referred as the “Poster Child” of sprawl but has remained in good graces with the environmental because of its eco-friendly attitude.

 The US Census Bureau says

  • Atlanta GA has a total Area of 133 square miles.
  • Half of Atlanta GA land mass is water.
  • Atlanta GA is 1050 ft above sea level.
  • Atlanta seats on the Chattahoochee Ridge on the South Side of the river.
  • The Eastern Continental dived enters Atlanta GA from the south and continues downtown along the CSX rail road lines ate Dekalb Ave.

 The climate though Humid is lovely.

  • The average high in July is 89 degrees. The Record High, recorded in 1980 was 105 in the city.
  • The average low is 71 degrees. January is the coldest month with average highs of 52 degrees. The Record Low, recorded in 1899 was -9 degrees.
  • Average rainfall is 50.2 inches.
  • There is frost and average of 36 days each year.

 As part of this growth Atlanta GA was rewarded when it was selected to host the 1996 Olympics. Once it was announced, Atlanta GA began many construction projects to improve its parks, stadiums, and transportation.

 Atlanta GA offers a grand view of its lighted skyline form many vantage points. The most note worthy being form the east side of the city looking to the West. It is worth riding around finding I20West and then turn back East. 

 The views include many high rise and mid rise buildings in both post modern and modern architecture. One build the Bank of America Build is rank 30th in the world in height. Further the Bank of America is the Tallest in the states except for Chicago and New York.

 The story of the “New South” in Atlanta GA continues. Unlike many cities in the South Atlanta GA has gone Modern. Choosing to be a progressive city with a skyline that is comprised of buildings designed by Michael Graves, Richard Meier, Renzo Piano, and Atlanta most notable architect that’s call Atlanta GA home, John Portman the designer of the Atrium Hotel.
