About Roswell GA

Roswell GA is located on the Northern banks of the Chattahoochee River of the Cherokee Indian Region. Cherokee Indians an early settlers once lived in peace in the area once know as the enchanted land until 1828 when gold was found. Upon the discovery of the gold Georgia quickly took the land and shaped the state into parcels and sold it to the highest bidders by land lottery in 1832.

The Indians opposed the taking of the land and fought but because of the peaceful ways relented and were lead from the land to Oklahoma. The Indians were marched in the late part of the summer of 1839 on the infamous “Trail of Tears”. A trial that lead to the death of many and land deals that shaped the state of Georgia.

Roswell GA was named for a Pierce Butler Plantation manager named Roswell King. He had run a cotton and rice plantation on Butler and St. Simons Island the 1830’s. later Roswell King moved after learning of fertile lands between the Chattahoochee River and Vickers Creek. His move was highly profitable from the start because he was up and running quickly because of his experience and the fact 75 slaves made the move with him. So profitable in fact Roswell Manufacturing Company open the following year.

The manufacturing company grew and many people relocated to the area. The growth Lead to Roswell King to build homes for the mill workers and the sale of  parcels of land to the wealthy relocating from the Georgia Coast. The wealth later built sprawling estate homes, churches, and opened the first schools.

Roswell officially was chartered and became the City of Roswell in 1854 after approval by the Georgia Assembly.

The cavalry arrived in 1864 lead by its commander Brigadier General Kenner Garrard and began destroying the City of Roswell that Roswell King had built.
