Located just out side of Atlanta in the northern part of the state, the city of Woodstock, Georgia can be found in Cherokee County. Part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, Woodstock is the tenth-fastest growing suburb in the country. About 21,000 people call Woodstock home, with more moving to the area every day.

But more than just an Atlanta suburb, Woodstock offers residents the beauty and character of a bygone era. A stroll along the brick paved sidewalks of Woodstock will give you a glimpse of the town’s past. Many of the buildings in Woodstock’s historic downtown date from 1879. Antique shops, tea rooms and special events recall Victorian times, while other shops and services—like hair salons, coffee houses, medical care, and car repair—woven through the fabric of downtown ensure Woodstock’s place as a historic village with all of the conveniences of the modern era. See why Woodstock lives up to its slogan, “where yesterday lives and tomorrow waits.”

Woodstock GA History

Over one hundred years old, Woodstock is one of the oldest towns in Cherokee County. Once a stop on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad line, Woodstock was founded in 1879 as the railroad established track in that area. With only 300 residents spread over 960 acres, Woodstock’s beginnings were humble. Industry at this time included wood carving, yarn spinning and milling, all facilitated by the flow of streams like the Little River, Noonday Creek and others. Later the Woodstock area would be found to be mineral-rich. Evidence of gold mining from this era can still be seen today as the Old Kellogg Gold Mine and several others are within a few miles of Woodstock. Woodstock grew into a prolific cotton growing region, and by the 1890’s, was said to be shipping 2,000 bales of cotton annually. This prosperity attracted many to the region, including developers who brought innovative farming methods to the county.

No one knows with any certainty how the town of Woodstock got its name. Many believe that Woodstock is named after a novel by Sir Walter Scott of the same name. Others believe that a man called “Mr. Woodstock” founded the first school in the area. But no matter which story you believe, today Woodstock is synonymous with growth. Today, the City of Woodstock is the fastest growing city in Cherokee County. Over the past 10 years, the city has doubled in size. With major highways, I-575 and State Highway 92, connecting Woodstock with the thriving Atlanta metropolitan area, the future holds unlimited possibilities for residents of Woodstock and Cherokee County.
